Short answer: a dryer sheet is a thin non-woven sheet coated in fabric-softening agents and fragrance. Tumbling heat melts that coating and transfers it onto your clothes, which does three things at once: it softens fibres, it neutralises the static charge that builds up in a hot dryer, and it deposits scent. Use one sheet for a regular load and two for a large or bulky one, dropped on top of the wet clothes before you start.
What a dryer sheet actually does
1. It softens
Cotton fibres come out of the wash standing on end, which is what makes a line-dried towel feel scratchy. The softening agents on the sheet coat each fibre in a thin, slippery layer so they lie flat against each other. That is the whole trick; nothing is being added to the fabric structure.
2. It kills static
Clothes rubbing against each other in a hot, dry drum swap electrons and build an electrical charge. Synthetics are the worst offenders because they hold that charge instead of releasing it. 3. It carries fragrance into the dryer
This is the part most brands treat as an afterthought. Heat is where laundry fragrance goes to die: the light top notes of a detergent evaporate in the dryer. A sheet composed with real base notes puts fragrance back at the end of the cycle, when clothes are warm and open and ready to hold it. How to use dryer sheets
- Load the wet clothes into the dryer.
- Lay one sheet loosely on top. Do not bury it at the bottom.
- Run your normal cycle. Low or medium heat keeps more fragrance in the fabric than high.
- Remove the sheet with the load and discard it. Check inside sleeves and pillowcases, where sheets like to hide.

Are dryer sheets necessary?
No, they are optional. They are worth using when your load has synthetics, fleece or anything that clings, when the air is dry and static is a problem, or when you want the fragrance to carry past the wash. They are worth skipping in three cases:
- Towels and microfibre. The softening coating reduces absorbency over time. If your towels have stopped drying you properly, this is usually why.
- Technical sportswear. The same coating blocks the wicking finish on running and gym kit.
- Flame-resistant children's sleepwear. Manufacturers advise against softeners because the coating can affect the finish.
Do dryer sheets make clothes smell better?
They make clothes smell different, and whether that is better depends entirely on the fragrance. A cheap sheet lays a strong, flat scent over whatever your detergent did, which is why so many people describe supermarket laundry as smelling generically of "laundry". A sheet that matches your detergent does the opposite: it reinforces the base notes that were already in the fibre, and the result lasts longer than either step alone.
Can you reuse a dryer sheet?
A used sheet still has some coating left, so a second pass gives you weak softening and almost no fragrance. Used sheets are genuinely useful off-duty: they pick up pet hair and dust, they deodorise a gym bag or a suitcase, and they wipe the lint screen clean. Just do not expect them to work twice in the dryer.
