Short answer: static cling happens when clothes tumble in a hot, dry drum, swap electrons and build an electrical charge that synthetics cannot release. The fastest permanent fix is to stop over-drying: take the load out slightly damp and add one dryer sheet, which bleeds the charge away as it softens. Why clothes cling
Two different materials rubbing together transfer electrons, leaving one positively charged and the other negatively charged. Opposite charges attract, so the shirt sticks to the sweater. Cotton holds moisture, and moisture lets that charge drain away harmlessly, which is why an all-cotton load rarely clings. Polyester, nylon, acrylic and fleece hold almost no moisture, so the charge has nowhere to go.
That gives you the three conditions behind every static problem: synthetic fabric, dry air, and a dryer left running past the point where the clothes were already dry. Winter is worse because cold indoor air holds very little humidity.
The seven fixes
1. Stop over-drying (the real fix)
Every extra minute past dry is a minute of pure charge building. Use a moisture-sensor cycle if your dryer has one, or set a timer 10 minutes shorter than you think you need and take the load out slightly warm and barely damp. Clothes finish drying on the hanger, and they wrinkle less too.
2. Use a dryer sheet

3. Separate synthetics from cotton
Static needs two dissimilar materials rubbing together. A load of nothing but cotton, or nothing but polyester, clings far less than a mixed one. Sorting by fabric instead of only by colour costs you nothing.
4. Dry on lower heat
High heat drives out the last of the moisture and takes fragrance with it. Medium or low takes a few minutes longer and leaves both the charge and the scent where you want them.
5. Add humidity to the room
If every load clings all winter, the problem is the air, not the laundry. A humidifier in the range of 40 to 50 percent relative humidity ends static across the whole house, including the shock you get off door handles.
6. Line dry the worst offenders
Fleece, athletic layers and anything acrylic can go on a rack. No tumbling, no friction, no charge. They also last considerably longer.
7. The thirty-second emergency fixes
- Metal. Run a wire hanger, a spoon or any metal object between the garment and your skin. Metal grounds the charge instantly.
- Water. Dampen your hands and run them over the fabric, or dab moisturiser on your legs. Moisture conducts the charge away.
- Hairspray. A light mist on the inside of a lining works, at the cost of a sticky film.
- Safety pin. Pinned inside a seam, it discharges the garment as you move.
What does not work
Liquid fabric softener helps less than people expect, because much of it rinses away before the dryer ever gets involved, and it brings its own problems with towels and sportswear. Wool dryer balls are good for drying time and wrinkles but do nothing for static, and in very dry air they can make it slightly worse by increasing friction. Aluminium foil balls do work, roughly, and they are noisy, they shed and they leave grey marks on light fabric. A dryer sheet does the same job cleanly.
Does static mean my detergent is wrong?
Not usually. Detergent choice affects softness and fragrance, not charge. What it does affect is residue: a detergent that does not rinse clean leaves a stiff deposit on fibres that makes clothes feel rougher and cling harder.
