Short answer: clothes that smell after washing almost always come down to one of four causes: bacteria left alive because the wash was too short, too cold and too crowded; body oil and detergent residue trapped in the fibre; a washing machine that is itself contaminated; or a load left sitting wet in the drum. The reset is a hot wash with two pods and no softener, an empty-drum clean cycle, and unloading the machine within an hour.

Cause 1: the wash was too gentle to kill anything
Cold, short, overloaded cycles are the modern default, and they are fine for lightly worn clothes. They are not enough for gym kit, towels or anything that has been damp. Odour-causing bacteria need mechanical action, enough water and enough time. A 30-minute quick cycle with the drum packed to the door gives them none of the three.
Fix: fill the drum no more than three quarters full, use a normal or heavy cycle rather than quick wash, and use two pods for a heavily soiled load. Our pods carry three enzymes, and protease is the one that breaks down the protein residues bacteria feed on.
Cause 2: residue is holding the smell in
This is the one almost nobody suspects. Liquid fabric softener coats fibres in a waxy layer that feels soft and traps body oil, dead skin and bacteria underneath it. Wash after wash the deposit thickens, and eventually clothes smell clean in the drawer and sour ten minutes after you put them on. Over-dosing liquid detergent does the same thing from the other direction.
Fix: stop using softener entirely. Then strip the build-up once, as described below. This is also why we recommend a dryer sheet over liquid softener.
Cause 3: the washing machine is the problem
If clothes come out smelling musty no matter what you wash, the machine is contaminated. Front-loaders are especially prone to it because the door gasket stays wet and the detergent drawer collects softener sludge.
- Pull back the rubber gasket and wipe the fold with hot water and a cloth. Expect to find black film.
- Remove the detergent drawer, soak it in hot water and scrub it.
- Run an empty drum on the hottest cycle, with a cleaning cycle if your machine has one.
- Leave the door and drawer open between washes so the drum dries.
Repeat monthly. A machine that stays wet and closed will re-seed every load you put through it.
Cause 4: the load sat wet
Mildew starts within a few hours in a warm drum. If you have forgotten a load, do not just run the dryer; re-wash it. Drying wet, mildewed fabric bakes the smell in.
The reset wash
Do this once on the worst offenders, then keep to the habits above.
- Load only the affected items, half a drum at most.
- Set the hottest temperature the care label allows.
- Add two pods to the empty drum. No softener, no beads.
- Run a long, normal cycle with an extra rinse if you have one.
- Dry fully on medium heat, or in the sun. Damp fabric restarts the problem.

How to stop it coming back
- Unload the washer within an hour. Set a timer if you need to.
- Leave the door and drawer ajar between washes.
- Skip liquid softener permanently.
- Do not overload. Three quarters full is the limit.
- Dry towels fully, and give them a hot wash every few weeks.
- Clean the machine once a month.
